The first people to live in Australia were the Aborigines who probably sailed over from the indonesian islands araound 40,000 years ago. Australia was claimed for Britain on the 26th of January 1788, this day is still celebrated as Australia day. The people to settle in Australia after it's declaration were convicts, sent from places such as England. These people were sentenced to exile in Australia for what would seem today to be very trivial crimes. These people set up ranches and farmed sheep and cattle. Australia has only recently moved on from the 'rough and ready' days when noone would touch Australian wine and so Beer was the predominent drink and still the cause of many jokes today. In 1927 the government was moved from Melbourne to the newly set up capital of Canberra to ensure no city could claim right to the parliament.
